We had a photo shoot at the Campo De Cahuenga Friday. It wasn't necessarily a cold day but it get's cold in the Campo with no heating, all that stone and tile and possibly ghosts. I thought it would be a good idea to go get some coffee and hot tea. I remembered years ago, I went to volunteer for KPFK. I chose a 5AM shift and along the way, I was half asleep but I thought it was weird that the street lights were off and i tried to listen to KPFK and got nothing. When I arrived, it was a black out so I went to get everyone coffee and donuts. K's Donut Emporium was open and they had lights. So I got a big thing of coffee for them and donuts. Well, K's still there and the donuts were delicious. I think I had two during the photo shoot.
I went to pick up some framed artwork at my friends shop, BN Framed. I was really excited. I had purchased one piece by John OBrien and two by Dorian Wood. I was a little early so I decided to have lunch at Coogies, 2906 Santa Monica Blvd Santa Monica CA 90404. It's an OG diner with a counter and vinyl upholstered booths. So cool. I got the burger with fries and really filled me up. It was delicious. A good patty with spices, fresh meaty tomatoes, solid bun and steak fries. Goopy ketchup on the fries and I was totally happy.
I'm familiar with Sweet Lady Jane on Melrose, across the street from Gemini Printing. I'd been going there since the 1980's. I had a rehearsal at artists Sam Erenberg's this weekend but arrive a little early so I decided to drive around. I found Sweet Lady Jane's other shop at 1631 Montana Ave, Santa Monica CA. Stopped by and had sufficient time to enjoy a chocolate croissant and mint tea. That was one of the best chocolate croissants I have ever had. The croissant is excellent and the chocolate powder on the top was a bitter dark that was so wonderful. My baby girl turned 19 this week so i decided to get a cake as well. It came down between the red velvet and a cake called the princess. I will always chose the funnier choice. Back at home, we sang happy birthday and she blew out the candles. The cake was decadent, moist, complex and memorable.
A hamburger stand I've past by many a times and finally decided to try it out. It's called Greek Tommy's Teriyaki Hamburger, 1275 Bronson Ave LA CA 90019. I think it's owned by a Korean chef and they have Mexican food. That's quite multi-cultural. I had a burger the day before so I decided to get the teriyaki chicken burrito with kim chee. It was delicious. The chicken teriyaki is layerd with tomatoes, rice and beans. There's a good portion of kim chee. The kim chee is not your garden variety kim chee, this is the hot stuff and puts a nice bite in your burrito experience.

This the 900th entry!!!!!! Paul's Kitchen, 1012 S San Pedro St, LA CA 90015, is an LA Institution. I hadn't been there for lunch for a number of years and was so happy to see it still there, in that same lot, with the parking lot and all that Dodger stuff over the counter. That whole area seems to have changed. A lot of new Garment District buildings and the Produce District stuff is being remolded. In the midst of all that redevelopment is this breath of history. I ordered the green beans and chashu lunch. The food here is always old school Chinese-American food and hot. I always sweat a lot when I eat here. To top it all off I got not one fortune cookie but two. oh yeah. That's the way they roll.

Blue Cow is a sit-down, upper scale second home of Mendocino Farms up at the Water Court off of Grand; 350 S Grand Ave. LA CA 90071, 213-621-2249. We went last week for some birthdays in the office and had a good time. Our server was a sweetie. She treated us well and the food came pretty quick, which our boss might have appreciated but they still complained that the whole office went out for lunch. oh well. I had the fried chicken sandwich, which was delicious. If you ever want a healthy fried chicken, this is your place because it is so drenched with coleslaw you really can't taste or enjoy and therefore not feel guilty for eating the fried chicken in the sandwich. I have to say, I wasn't that bummed, the sandwich was delicious. GINORMOUS french fries!!!!
Fresh N Tasty has been there for a really long time. They always have that roasted turkey ready for lunch and some of the best soup in Downtown LA. No nonsense soup; barley, pea soup, chicken noodle. Each soup comes with a roll. For less than $5, you're full and ready for the second half of the day. I've been enjoying the soup here since 1992. I love this place. 700 S Flower Street Lower Food Court LA CA 90017
University of Hawaii VS Long Beach, so you know a planned family outing was made months ago. Oh yes it was. Half of us rooting for one team and half the other. Fourteen tickets sold to my family and there we were, in the Pyramid, occupying two rows above the CSULB bench; half the time watching the game and half the time watching my son, suited up and supporting the team. The Beach won in a very thrilling game. Afterwards, we were all hungry so my cousin Kazu suggested Bake n Broil, especially when he realized I had never been there. It's located at 3697 Atlantic Ave Long Beach CA, 562-595-0396. We showed up around 8:30 PM and had to wait about a half hour. It was the evening that started the recent chilly weather so we tried to seat as many on the waiting couch. Our group took over two dining tables and the plethora of food that arrived was beautiful. I couldn't even have dessert I was so full. The food here is wonderful Americana. I had the delicious chicken pot pie. The meatloaf was also excellent and the my daughter's roasted chicken was amazing. Thanks Kazu and Kerrie! Delicious!!!!
Monrovia has never disappointed me with food. What is up with that suburban quandary? Case in point, Jake's BBQ. They are located at 622 South Myrtle Ave Monrovia CA. I ordered the pull pork sandwich, which was wet, messy, hearty, tangy and filling to the max. This sandwich was a sloppy joe in disguised and it made me really happy that afternoon.
Our dear friends Marta Perlas and Kipp Kobayashi have been telling us about this place for at least five years. Enough was enough so we took our our collective "girls" to the SB and made a day of it starting with the legendary La Super Rica located at 622 N Milpas St, Santa Barbara CA 93101, 805-963-4940. Marta decided to order every notable tacos on the menu. The beauty of the place is it's handmade-to-order tortilla. These flour tortillas are fluffy, warm, delicious and melt in your mouth. I also appreciated the roasted chilies, marinated meats and this intense melted cheese and homemade bacon dish. We arrived a half hour before they opened on a week day so we did not have wait in line very long. That's right, the lines insane. By the time we were out of there, the line circled down the block. Wow. And then we went to the zoo and feed the giraffe.
