Artist Marshall Astor told me that this restaurant, originally from Portland, had the best Papaya Salad he had outside of Thailand but when they first opened Pok Pok Pad Thai (several blocks south of this location), they didn't have it on the menu. The staff said they would have it when they open the restaurant. Well, I've been twice now and it's a wonderful place. The Pok Pok special includes the papaya salad and an amazing roasted duck. The scotch selection is awesome and there's a bar upstairs. The second time, I went with artist Patricia Fernandez and I ordered the spicy fried chicken, which was over the top. One of my newest favorites, I highly recommend this place. 978 N Broadway LA CA 90012
Pinched for time and in route to the Hollywood Freeway, I drove through the area north of Hollywood and Vine to find Bela Julia, 6363 Yucca Street Hollywood CA 90028. Ham and cheese sandwich. Really high level sandwich. is that an oxymoron? Not in this case.

I was on Jury Duty for just 2 days but it was my first time in the jury pool for a criminal case, very cool. During the break, I went downstairs to the cafeteria. Pretty lo-tech interior design. The breakfast burrito was actually fairly tasty. This is the court the OJ Trails took place. Temple and Hill Street, Downtown LA.
Sometimes I pick up my son after a game at CSULB and we have dinner. Usually, we don't make reservations or plan. We sort of drive around and find a place neither of us have been to. This time, we went to this place. it's a chain restaurant. we were a little hesitant because of that but gotta try it atlas once. Well, fairly mediocre. It's just not great crab or seafood. The interior has that Gump Shrimp feel. Run Forrest Run! is my suggestions. There are so many great places to eat in the LBC. This is definitely not one of them. 6550 Marina Drive LB CA 90803
Maruhide Uni Club, 2130 W Redondo Beach Blvd Torrance CA 90504. I have one friend from Washington DC who will come into town, allegedly plan her trip, usually with her husband, but call me once she's in and ask if I can have dinner that night. It's rude, true but she's consistent. This time, we met at a place she and her husband love but I had never been to. Uni is sea urchin. If you like uni, this place is glorious.
Rays is the food part and Stark is the bar part, I think? This is the cafe at LACMA adjacent to the BP Plaza but I think they stay calling it the BP Plaza after the big oil spill off Corpus Cristi. Anyway, Rays has the water menu. Expensive bottles of water from around the world. i had heard the burger was great and it was. I went with artist Alexis Disselkoen. We had a great time and even bumped into Tricia Ward and Anne Bray. The food was pretty good. I can't say I had high hopes but it was surprisingly good. The water menu is hilarious. 5905 Wilshire Blvd LA CA 90036
The Broad Museum opened, which is cool. The building is fun. The front exterior looks like one of those Euro-trash net t-shirts and even has a belly button. Next door is a restaurant called Vespaio, 225 S Grand Ave LA CA 90012. The sandwich and salad I ordered was amazing. Kinda of pricey, but so delicious. I was on Jury Duty and they give you a 90 minutes lunch so i took full advantage of it on that day. Unfortunately or fortunately, they excused me during the jury interview and back to work I went.
So the story is that one of the co-owneres received this multi-pour coffee filter holder so she decided to start making coffee for people. this was in Venice CA. One thing led to another and it caught on. The now have this storage unit turned coffee shop off the Alameda in Downtown LA. J.U.I.C.E. also has a unit on the same property. Great folks and delicious coffee. I especially love the recycled storage units. 527 Colyton St LA CA 90013
So one night, I was out with my friend Jen in Downtown LA. There was a movie playing at the Ace Hotel theater. I wanted to see the film, which was about Jaco Pastorius but I also wanted to see the Ace Hotel theater interior (historic building). The screening did not start on time, in fact it started an hour + late. by the time we got out, not much was open and we were hungry. Luckily, we found this place, which was suspect, especially with the name of the place. I ordered a bagel and I was freakishly surprised. Was it because I was starving? The bagel and lox with cream cheese was in fact delicious. 557 S Spring St LA CA 90013
