VIA Cafe

Vietnamese sandwiches are awesome. I ordered a combo with ham and peppers. The bread was awesome, crunchy on the outside and freshly soft inside. I ordered a mango slush which was lucky because the peppers burned. Via Cafe is kind of next door to the Mountain Bar and Munkey King in Chinatown. Their address is 451 Gin Ling Way #B, Los Angeles CA 90012, 213-617-1481.

Cafe Dahab

Met up with friends over the weekend to check out the film "FINISHING THE GAME" at the NuArt in West Los. Before hand, we hooked up at Cafe Dahab, 1640 Sawtelle Blvd LA CA 90025, 310-444-0969. I don't know what a Hooka is per se but I think I'd like to try that out one of these days. It looks like the thing the catepillar was smoking in Disney's version of Alice in Wonderland. I ordered a dish and a drink. There were about 8 of us at the table. I never got my meal, which ordinarly would piss me off but this ended up being a blessing because MANN the servings here are really huge. I ended up getting samples of everyone's plate. I loved the shrimp kabob plate. it was delicious. I hadn't had shrimp that good in a while.

I WAS INTRODUCED TO MY NEW FAVORITE COFFEE PLACE TODAY !!!!!!!!!!! Intelligentsia, 3922 West Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles, California 90029, Well, I still love Bitches Brew from Groundworks, but the coffee at Intelligentsia is brewed and served in such a higher culinary experience that my heart melted in the most squishiest of fashion. The shop in Silverlake is next door to the Silverlake Conservancy (Yay Flea!) and the Silverlake Cheese Shop (Yay Jorge!). When we first walked in, it felt like the members of Death Cab for Cutie, Broken Social Scene and the Concretes where scattered throughout the sitting area and ordering counter or that we were in Canada. it would have made a beautiful album cover. Chocolates, coffees, teas and baked goods. The coffee is for the coffee aficionado, for those who appreciate each ingredient meticulously created, crafted and timed. My cappuccino gave me a slow and smooth caffeine sensation. Not the 4-D sensation I often get on the rare occasions I have coffee. The chocolates kick ass to the point where ass kicking becomes sensual. I had the Intelligentisa signature chocolate with tiny bits of roasted coffee and the bacon chocolate. oh yes, and the service is brilliant.

Rigo Taco #5

At 2212 Union Avenue, LA CA near USC is a taco place called Rigo Taco #5. The atmosphere is common to LA. Stainless steel tall ordering counters, tamarindo and Horchata machines at full force, a side cart for salsa, onions, peppers, chili's and radish. The taco here is really good. Two small tortillas together to give you that extra-strength construction for the whopping sauteed meat. Today I got Al Pastor. The meat here is deliciously seasoned and ingredients are super fresh.

Pacific Dining Car

Old School! The Pacific Dining Car is located at 1310 West 6th Street, LA CA 90017, 213-483-6000. The service is so turn of the century, not the latest one but the second to latest one. I had a top sirloin which I wasn't pleased with but it's really all about the crabcakes. They have the best crabcakes there, it makes the steak a side dish. They are crunchy on the outside and tender in the inside with lots of crab. They're also on the big size too, which we all appreciate. We also had the Ceasar and a side of corn which was awesome. The last time I was there, they served a delicous red wine. I think it was the house Merlot and I believe they have a very good wine selection there. Dinner is about $70 with dessert and a wine. The servers are fantastic. If you've never been there, it's a must if you love LA history and service the way it was meant to be. The food is rich so come very hungry.

I really like Echo Park. There are a lot of places to eat, shop and hang. It's got a lot of good vibe to it and interesting mix of new transplants and Latino families and artists, etc. On Echo Park Blvd. sits a coffeehouse called Chango, 1559 Echo Park Avenue, LA CA 90026, 323-977-9161. In this little strip of retail shops are fashion and art places, a market and other things that don't open until later in the day. There used to be a bookshop there where I first saw the artwork of Megan Whitmarsh (Snow Monkeys). Today, I had an "Elixir Recharge" hot tea and a red velvert cup cake. Now this morning, I woke up under-the-weather and even though a cupcake is not a orthodox remedy, I thought the brilliant red would cheer me up with my Elixir Recharge and also the cashier reccomended it. The cake was a little dry but not too sweet. The frosting was fantastic or should I say, fab. I've been listeng to the new Feist CD I bought last night from Amoeba. It seems to all fit within the context of Fall in LA.

SW Steakhouse in LV

I was treated to an amazing dinner at the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas. SW Steakhouse is at the Wynn Hotel in Vegas at 3131 Las Vegas Blvd So., Las vegas NV 89109, 702-770-3325. We had delicious wines, breads and the butter had caviar sprinkled on top of it. I ordered a top sirloin steak with bluecheese topping with a side of corn soup. The food here is excellent and prepared in the most cuisine-trained passion. There were items on the menu that cost as much as the final tab of our four person dinner. It was a memorable evening for me, filled with important first impressions and laughter. We were seated outside infront of the "Lake of Dreams", where every 30 minutes there's a robotic or animated "show". The highlight was a enflated two-story robotic frog that sang Low Rider

Hush Puppy

Hush Puppy, 7185 W Charleston Blvd Las Vegas, NV 89117-1523, (702) 363-5988 was highly recommended to me by friend, Texan and BBQ expert, Bernard Lomax. The last time I was in LV was in 1994. it's been a while. The hush puppies were dreamy. They melted in my mouth and had a slightly sweet taste. The insides where creamy and hot. We had sides of fried shrimp, oysters and catfish. They also had alligator and frog legs. The gumbo was excellent. It was fresh tasting and hot enough to give you a buzz. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and I was so happy to have finally made it to this place. They also had a drive through for take outs. That was one of the coolest things I've ever seen.

What a funny name, Ugo, 3865 Cardiff Avenue Culver City CA 90232, 310-204-1222. It's a sunny interior decorated cafe with an outdoor area in front that serves Italian food. My kids and I went last week after school. i was to preoccupied with our production at Highways to cook dinner. Reasonably priced, there's a great deal on the menu including pastas, calzones, pizza, spumoni, etc. The salads were fresh and tasty and the pasta dishes were meaty and filling. I'd like to go back someday and try the homemade tiramisu. My son spotted the lead from Bones. I never watched the TV show but recognized him from the commercials.
