The Eki Bento: Onigiri/ Japan

It's been ten years since my last trip to Japan, twenty-six years since I've been to Tokyo. This trip was a multi-destination trip filled with field recording assignments, meetings, friends and family. The reunions were deeply amazing and the meetings were incredible learning opportunities. In between all these appointments which span from Tokyo, Sapporo, Fukushima, Koriyama and Hiroshima were experiences to Listening Bars/ Kissas and of course food. I was fortunate to see Mt Fuji while flying and had several opportunities to see Sakura's blooming.

In between stops while traveling are the Eki (station) Bento (box lunch) stands. Here I got an onigiri. While it's not a bento, arguably, the spirit of the bento is the onigiri. I love the onigiri and lean toward Sake (salmon) usually. Everyone has a preference. What's important and still fairly common is someone is hand making these and not using a machine. It's a very different experience when its handmade. Wrapped in nori (seaweed), it's kind of the Japanese burrito, sort of.
