CBGB in STL
CBGB is located at 3163 S Grand Blvd, Saint Louis, MO 63118 and has been here for decades. I was told that at some point, the NY CBGB sent a cease letter but CBGBSTL turned around and said they weren't copying the renown Punk club, CBGB was in fact the owners initials and so today we can say CBGB STL outlasted the NY historic club by quite a bit.
During my recent visit to STL for my Counterpublic project, "Future House Heads This Was Tu's House", I requested Dino Taca and Eric Dunn (the late Tu Tien Tran's very closest and oldest friends) to introduce me to the "Sandanista", a cocktail invented at the former Upstairs Lounge.
Matt Warner, now owner of CBGB STL, was an early Upstairs Lounge bartender and was around when the cocktail was invented. The "Sandanista" was named after the Clash song. It consists of tequilla, Seracha, Worcestershire Sauce, pepper and a lime....or something like that.
I found it delicious and drank the whole glass. We toasted Tu and gulped it down. Well, that night back in my hotel room, the 24 revenge of the Sandanista began.
In many of my interviews of DJ's and former UL staff, the Sandanista is mentioned with great fondness although I only heard two people say they liked it.
Well, for me, research is research and I could now check that off my list. I would say you should try it once and also you don't have to finish the whole glass. if you do, you should go eat something greasy like a Slinger immediately afterwards or maybe some Menudo.
